What the quick check tells you
- You hear Left and Right in both ears: Mono Audio is on. Turn it off (step 3 below).
- One side is silent on every button: that earbud isn't connected, is out of battery, or is blocked. Start at step 1.
- One side is quieter: check the balance setting (step 3), then clean the mesh (step 4).
- Left plays in your right ear: you're wearing them the wrong way round; check the L/R marks.
How to fix one earbud not working
1. Charge both earbuds and check each battery
Earbuds drain at different rates. Put both in the case, make sure the case itself is charged, and wait 15 minutes. On iPhone, open the case next to the phone to see each earbud's battery; on Android, check the Bluetooth device details or the brand's app.
2. Put them back in the case for 30 seconds
This restarts the link between the two earbuds, which fixes the most common cause of one earbud not working: one bud dropping its connection to the other. Close the lid, wait 30 seconds, then take both out at the same time.
3. Check balance and Mono Audio
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → set Balance to the center, turn Mono Audio off.
- Android: Settings → Accessibility → Audio adjustment (name varies by brand) → center the balance, turn Mono audio off.
- Windows: Settings → System → Sound → your earbuds → set both channel levels equal. Mono audio is under Accessibility → Audio.
- Mac: System Settings → Sound → Output → Balance to the middle.
4. Clean the speaker mesh and charging contacts
Earwax on the mesh makes one side quiet or muffled, and dirt on the small metal contacts stops that earbud charging. Brush the mesh gently with a dry, soft toothbrush and wipe the contacts (on the earbud and inside the case) with a dry cotton swab. Don't use water or push anything into the mesh.
5. Forget and re-pair the earbuds
In Bluetooth settings, choose your earbuds and select Forget this device. Put both earbuds back in the case, then pair them again as if they were new. If the silent earbud still won't connect, move on to a reset.
6. Reset the earbuds
Most earbuds reset by holding the button on the case (or both touch panels) for 10–15 seconds until a light flashes. The exact steps differ by model, so follow your manufacturer's instructions. For AirPods, Apple's steps are: put them in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds, open it, then press and hold the setup button on the case until the light flashes amber, then white.
Why is one earbud not working? The usual causes
- Battery: one earbud is flat or not charging because of dirty contacts.
- Connection: true wireless earbuds often connect to the phone through one "main" earbud; if the second loses that link, it goes silent.
- Settings: balance shifted to one side, or Mono Audio on.
- Blockage: earwax or dust on the speaker mesh.
- Hardware: a damaged driver, battery or antenna, usually after a drop or water exposure.
One earbud not working wired
With wired earbuds or headphones, the cable is the usual suspect. Push the plug all the way in, clean the headphone jack or USB-C adapter, and try another device. Then play sound and slowly bend the cable near the plug and near the silent earbud: if the sound crackles or comes back as you bend, the wire is broken inside and the cable or earbuds need replacing.
Brand-specific tips
- Beats Fit Pro one earbud not working: put both in the case, check both charge, then reset from the case button per Beats' instructions and re-pair.
- Jabra one earbud not working: check the Jabra Sound+ app for a firmware update, then reset and re-pair from the app or the case.
- Tozo A1 one earbud not working and Tozo T10 one earbud not working: these often lose the link between the two buds. Remove them from your phone's Bluetooth list, then follow the reset steps in the Tozo manual so the two earbuds pair to each other again before pairing with the phone.
If an earbud still won't work after a reset, contact the manufacturer: many sell single replacement earbuds, and a faulty bud is often covered by warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Why is one earbud not working?
The most common causes are a flat battery in that earbud, the earbud losing its connection to the other one, a balance or mono audio setting, earwax blocking the speaker mesh, or a dirty charging contact. A hardware fault is less common than people think.
How do I fix one earbud not working?
Charge both earbuds, put them back in the case for 30 seconds, check the balance and mono audio settings, clean the speaker mesh and charging contacts, then forget and re-pair them in Bluetooth settings. If none of that works, reset the earbuds using the manufacturer's steps.
One earbud not working wired: what should I check?
Push the plug all the way in, clean the headphone jack or adapter, and slowly bend the cable near the plug and near the earbud while sound plays. If the sound cuts in and out as you bend it, the cable is broken inside.
Can a dead earbud be fixed?
If the earbud charges, connects and simply plays quietly or not at all, cleaning and a reset fix most cases. If it won't charge or connect at all after a reset, the battery or electronics may be faulty; many brands sell single replacement earbuds.
